LMS - Learning Management System

What IS a Learning Management System?

A Learning Management System (or LMS) is a software package, usually on a large scale (that scale is decreasing rapidly), that enables the management and delivery of learning content and resources to students. Most LMS systems are web-based to facilitate "anytime, anywhere" access to learning content and administration.

At a minimum, the LMS usually allows for student registration, the delivery and tracking of e-learning courses and content, and testing, and may also allow for the management of instructor-led training classes. In the most comprehensive of LMSs, one may find tools such as competency management, skills-gap analysis, succession planning, certifications, virtual live classes, and resource allocation (venues, rooms, textbooks, instructors, etc.). Most systems allow for learner self-service, facilitating self-enrollment, and access to courses.

Some LMS vendors do not distinguish between LMS and LCMS, preferring to refer to both under the term "LMS", but there is a difference. The LCMS, which stands for "Learning Content Management System", facilitates organization of content from authoring tools, and presentation of this content to students via the LMS.

LMSs are based on a variety of development platforms, from Java EE based architectures to Microsoft .NET, and usually employ the use of a robust database back-end. While most systems are commercially developed, free and open-source models do exist. Other than the most simplistic, basic functionality, all LMSs cater to, and focus on different educational, administrative, and deployment requirements.

The Learning Management System (LMS) manages the delivery of self-paced, e-learning courses. The LMS lets you publish courses and place them in an online catalog and/or assign courses to learners. Learners log into the LMS using a browser and launch courses. The LMS tracks the learners' activities with the courses using SCORM 2004 or SCORM 1.2. The LMS provides online reports for each course and learner. The LMS is inexpensive (see the LMS price list) yet provides the essential features you need.

o f a l e a r n i n g ma n a g em e n t s y s t em ( LMS ) , the basic description

is a software application that automates the administration, tracking,

and reporting of training events. However, it's not that simple. A robust

LMS should be able to do the following:

• centralize and automate administration

• use self-service and self-guided services

• assemble and deliver learning content rapidly

• consolidate training initiatives on a scalable web-based platform

• support portability and standards

• personalize content and enable knowledge reuse.

More important, an LMS should integrate with other enterprise application

solutions used by HR and accounting, enabling management to measure the

impact, effectiveness, and over all cost of training initiatives.

Because so many factors are involved in the decision to purchase an LMS,

the market frustrates buyers, making it nearly impossible to compare

suppliers. For example, high-end options don't ensure quality, and some lowend solutions provide quick and easy-to-install versions that handle basic

functionality but don't offer everything your organization may need in the

future. Adding to the confusion is the high rate of mergers and consolidations

within the LMS market.

So how can organizations make smart purchasing decisions about learning

management systems? Although every implementation is different, both at

the back-end installation and at the logic and requirements level, there are

some common factors to address when evaluating the right LMS for your

LMS and LCMS demystified

"Learning management systems (LMS) and learning content management systems (LCMS) really have two very different functions. It's unfortunate that both have such similar names and a shared acronym, which only serves to confuse e-learning buyers even more." From Brandon Hall.
